TeamSideline ranks a division in two passes. First it orders the teams by Games Back (wins minus losses), or by points for soccer, indoor soccer, hockey, golf and any division with a Custom Points configuration. Then the division's tie breakers, in order, separate teams that are still tied. With the Standings Method set to Bypass, the first pass is skipped and the tie breakers set the whole order.

Which games count
- Games that are Played, Forfeit by home, Forfeit by away or Double forfeit count. Games that are Not played, Scoring in progress, Canceled or Score not kept don't, and neither do byes.
- A forfeit is a win for the other team and a loss for the team that forfeited. The winner's score is the division's Forfeit Opponent setting (for example Forfeit Opponent Runs) and the loser's is 0. A double forfeit is a loss for both teams.
- A game with Hide in Standings checked on Edit Scores (Exclude From Standings on Multi Division Scoring) doesn't count. A team marked External Team on 2 Teams isn't listed, but its opponents keep those results.
- In sports with overtime, such as hockey, checking Overtime on a game gives the losing team an overtime loss (OTL) instead of a loss. A game is never both.
- With more than one score per game (# of Scores per Game), How Winner is Calc'd decides what counts: Count all Scores counts each set of scores as its own win, loss or tie, and Best of Series gives one win to the team that won more sets. With Exclude Games set to Yes, 0-0 sets after the first aren't counted.
Games Back (most sports)
- Team Differential = wins minus losses. Ties don't change it.
- Games Back = (the best Team Differential minus the team's Team Differential) ÷ 2.
- Example: Team A is 5-2, a Team Differential of 3. Team B is 5-3, a Team Differential of 2. Team B is (3 − 2) ÷ 2 = 0.5 games back.
- Winning Percentage, if your standings show it, is wins plus half the ties, divided by games played. It's also a tie breaker.
Points
| Sport | Win | Tie | Loss | Other |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soccer and Indoor Soccer | 3 | 1 | 0 | Forfeit win 3 |
| Hockey | 2 | 0 | 0 | Overtime loss 1, forfeit win 2 |
| Golf and Disc Golf (lowest score wins) | 1 | 0.5 | 0 | |
| Any sport with a Custom Pts Config. | The values in that Custom Points configuration | |||
- A Custom Points configuration (Schedules > Configurations > Custom Points) sets Win, Tie, Loss, Forfeit Win, Forfeit Loss, Double Forfeit, Per Goal/Run/Point (up to Max Points For), Shutout, Per Penalty and Over Time Loss. Choose it in Custom Pts Config. on the division's Scoring page; Default turns it off.
- Futsal is ranked by Games Back, like most sports, unless you choose a Custom Pts Config.
- In Games Back sports, a points column (if your standings layout shows one) counts 3 for a win and 1 for a tie, but it doesn't set the order.
Standings Method: GB/Pts. or Bypass
- GB/Pts., the usual setting, runs the first pass by Games Back or points as described above.
- Bypass skips the first pass. Every team starts tied, and Tie Breakers 1 to 8 set the whole order, so choose tie breakers that rank every team, for example Winning Percentage or Total Wins, and end with Coin Toss.
How ties are broken
- Teams with the same Games Back (or points) after the first pass are tied. TeamSideline applies Tie Breakers 1 to 8 from the division's Scoring page, in order, to each tied group, and stops at the first one set to Not Used.
- Teams still tied after the last tie breaker share a place, and the next team takes the next number (for example 1, 2, 2, 3). Coin Toss uses a random number given to each team, so it always separates them. A new division starts with eight tie breakers ending in Coin Toss unless your Sport Defaults set others.
- Max Differential Points limits how big a score margin the differential tie breakers count.
- To see why each team is where it is, click Tie Breaker Analysis on the division's Standings page. Details By Team shows each team's placement type and the tie breaker that placed it.
Settings that change what's included
- Playoff in Standings: Yes adds playoff games to the regular-season (1st Half) standings. Playoff brackets seeded By Standings still use the regular-season games only.
- Consolidated Standings: Yes includes 1st Half games in the 2nd Half standings.
- Exclude Cross Division: Yes leaves out all cross-division games.
Saving the Scoring page recalculates the division's standings right away ("Division configuration updated."). To use these settings for new divisions of a sport, set them in Schedules > Configurations > Sport Defaults.
When standings are recalculated
- Standings are recalculated when scores are saved on Edit Scores or Multi Division Scoring, when coaches or officials report scores, when you click Standings Update Only on Edit Scores, when you save the Scoring page or Edit Penalties, and when a team's External Team setting changes.
- Edit Standings on the Standings page sets each team's Place by hand. Your order lasts only until the next recalculation, as the page says: "Standings Updated. Next time you Edit Scores & Save, the standings will be recalculated."
- Tournament divisions rank each pool separately, with the same rules.
Good to know
- The columns you show don't change the order. Standings Layout and the GB/GP or PF/PA choice (named for your sport, for example GB/GP or RF/RA) are on 1 Configuration > Display, and custom layouts are in Schedules > Configurations > Custom Standings.
- Show Tie Breakers on 1 Configuration > Display shows the division's tie breakers with its schedule.
- Edit Penalties on the Standings page records each team's penalties for the season. They change the standings only through a Custom Points configuration's Per Penalty value (use a negative number to subtract points).
- Playoff brackets seeded By Standings take their teams from these standings once every regular-season game has a result.
