To count a game in the standings for only one of its two teams, put a stand-in team marked External Team (for example, Yankees-x) in place of the team that shouldn't get credit. The other team keeps the result, and the stand-in is never listed in the standings, so the game doesn't count for the real team.
Applies to: Admins and schedulers · All plans · Standard league divisions
Where: Schedules > Leagues & Divisions > (division) > More Options > 2 Teams, 1 Configuration > Display and 4 Create Schedule
To leave a game out of the standings for both teams, use How to exclude a game from the standings (Hide in Standings) instead.
Before you start
- The game must be Not played, because only Not played games can be changed on 4 Create Schedule. If it already has a score, open Edit Scores from the division's Standings page, clear both scores, set its Disposition to Not played and click Save. You'll enter the score again at the end.
- The game will show the stand-in's name on every schedule, so choose a name people will recognize, such as the team's name followed by -x.
- The game moves to the stand-in team. It no longer appears on the real team's Team Site or in the app, or when someone picks the real team in your public schedule's team list, so let the team know about it another way.
Step 1: Add the stand-in team
- Go to Schedules > Leagues & Divisions.
- Open the division's More Options menu and choose 2 Teams (then Regular, if a list appears).
- Click Add Team.
- In Team Name, type the real team's name with a mark after it, such as Yankees-x. Two teams in a division can't have the same name.
- Check External Team.
- Click Add.
What you'll see: the stand-in is listed on 2 Teams with "*External Team" under its name.
Step 2: Turn off byes if the real team has no other game that week
When you save the schedule, 4 Create Schedule adds a bye for every team that has no game in a week. Once this game no longer lists the real team, the real team gets a bye that week unless it plays another game. To stop that:
- Open the division's More Options menu and choose 1 Configuration > Display.
- Set Show Byes to No and click Save.
What you'll see: "Division configuration updated." Show Byes covers the whole division: No hides every bye on the division's schedule, not just this one, and 4 Create Schedule stops adding byes.
Step 3: Put the stand-in in the game
- Open the division's More Options menu and choose 4 Create Schedule (then Regular, if a list appears).
- Find the game. In its Home or Away list, whichever shows the real team, choose the stand-in.
- Click Calc & Save.
What you'll see: "The Schedule has been calculated, saved, and is shown below. You can now view this schedule on the Standings & Results page." The game now lists the stand-in. A Review Scheduling (RS) alert may name the real team, because it now has one game fewer than Games Played/Team. It's a warning only and doesn't stop the save.
Step 4: Enter the score
- On the division's Standings page, click Edit Scores.
- Type both scores for the game and click Save.
What you'll see: "Results saved and standings updated successfully." The other team's record includes the game, the real team's record doesn't, and the stand-in isn't listed in the standings.
If it doesn't work
- "This Team name is in use. Please use a different Team name." Another team in the division already has that name. Use a different mark, such as -x2.
- Add Team is grayed out, with the message "Add Team" and "Add Placeholders" are disabled due to the registration type Team. Teams are added during the enrollment process. The league comes from a Team Registration program, where you can't add teams yourself. Contact TeamSideline Support (Help > Contact Support, or support@teamsideline.com) with the league, division and game.
- The game has no Home or Away list on 4 Create Schedule. The game isn't Not played (see Before you start), or it's a locked or cross-division game, which can't be changed there.
- The real team shows a bye that week. Show Byes is Yes. Set it to No (Step 2), and the bye no longer shows.
- The game still counts for the real team. Check that the stand-in, not the real team, is in the game, and that the stand-in shows "*External Team" on 2 Teams. Then click Edit Scores and Standings Update Only to recalculate ("Standings updated successfully.").
Good to know
- If you set Show Byes back to Yes, the next Calc & Save adds byes again, including one for the real team in that week if it has no other game.
- Stats can't be entered for the stand-in's side of the game: Edit Stats has no stat entry for an External Team.
- A playoff bracket seeded By Standings still waits for this game to have a result, like any other regular-season game.
- To undo it while the game is still Not played, choose the real team again in the game's list on 4 Create Schedule and click Calc & Save. You can then delete the stand-in on 2 Teams; a team that still has games can't be deleted.
