To turn words in a News Item into a link to a page on your website, highlight the words in News Item Description, open the Links drop-down in the editor's toolbar and click the page. You don't need to copy the page's address. For a page on another website, use the Hyperlink Manager and paste the address instead.
Applies to: Org admins and content editors · All plans · Legacy content editor
Where: Content > News Items > Edit icon (or Add News Item) > News Item Description
Link text to one of your pages
- Go to Content > News Items.
- Click the Edit icon (pencil) on the News Item's row, or click Add News Item.
- In News Item Description, type the words for the link, for example "Register here", and highlight them.
- In the editor toolbar, click the Links drop-down. It starts the last group of toolbar buttons, just before the indent and list buttons
- Click the plus sign next to the group the page is in: Menu Pages (pages in your site's menu, with their sub-pages under them), Standalone Pages (pages that aren't in the menu), User Secured Pages, Admin Secured Pages or Standard Pages (built-in pages such as Home, Game Schedules, Contact Us and Store).
- Click the page. The highlighted words become a link to it.
- Click Save.
What you'll see: "The News Item has been saved." ("The News Item has been created." for a new one), and you're back on the News Items list. On your website, the words show as a link wherever the News Item appears on the News page, and on your Home page if Show on Home Page is checked. Click the link there to test it.
The same drop-down also links text to your files (Downloads), Programs, Program Access codes, division Schedules and Entry Forms.
Link text to another website or a copied address
- Open the page in your browser and copy its address from the address bar.
- On Content > News Items, open the News Item and highlight the words in News Item Description.
- Click the Hyperlink Manager button in the toolbar. Hover over the buttons to see their names.
- In URL, delete anything that's already there (such as http://) and paste the address.
- Change Link Text if you want different words, then click OK.
- Click Save.
To make a link open in a new browser tab, highlight the linked words, open the Hyperlink Manager and set Target to New Window.
If it doesn't work
- The page isn't in the Links drop-down. The list comes from Content > Configurations > Site Pages. If you just added or moved the page there, click Save on Site Pages, then open the News Item again. Pages under Archived Pages aren't listed.
- The link goes to the wrong place. Highlight the linked words and open the Hyperlink Manager to check the URL, or delete the words, type them again and link them again.
- "You have exceeded the maximum text length for a news item (3000 characters)." The description, including its hidden HTML formatting, is over 3,000 characters, and every link adds its address to the count. The counter under the editor ("Characters including HTML") shows where you are. Shorten the text, or put the details on a page and link to it.
- "To save a News Item, you need to complete the News Item Title field." or "To save a News Item, you need to complete the News Item Description field." Fill in the title (up to 50 characters) and the description.
- Visitors are asked to sign in when they click the link. That's expected for a User Secured Page: visitors sign in, then see the page. It also happens with the Store: anyone can browse it, but shoppers are asked to sign in when they check out ("Please sign in to complete your enrollment or order.").
- "You are not authorized to see this page." You linked to an Admin Secured Page, which only your organization's admins can open. Link to a Menu or Standalone page instead.
- The News Item doesn't show on your website. On the News Items list, a red eye icon (Toggle Visibility) means it's hidden; click it to show it. A News Item is also hidden automatically once its Show Until date and time pass.
Good to know
- You can also make the News Item's picture a link: set Image Link Type to Page and choose the Page (or pick Download, Entry Form, Features or URL), and use Open In New Window for that picture link. The picture link works where the News Item appears on your Home page; on the News page the picture isn't a link, so link text too if you want the link everywhere.
- The Hyperlink Manager works with any address you can copy from your browser, including a page on your own site that the Links drop-down doesn't list.
- Websites built with Editor 2.0 post news in the website editor. This article covers the legacy News Items page.
