A Vanity Link is a short, easy-to-remember address on your own domain, such as yourleague.org/spring, that sends visitors to any web address you choose: a registration page, a form, a document or another website. Add one on Content > Configurations > Vanity Links: choose your Domain, click Add Vanity URL, enter a Vanity Name and the Destination URL, and click Add.
Applies to: Org admins whose role includes Vanity Links · Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise plans · Legacy content editor, with your own domain connected to your TeamSideline website
Where: Content > Configurations > Vanity Links
Before you start
- Your organization needs its own domain, such as yourleague.org, set up on your TeamSideline legacy website. Vanity Links work only on that domain, not on your teamsideline.com address. If you don't have a domain set up, the Add Vanity URL button is grayed out; contact TeamSideline Support.
- Copy the Destination URL first: open the page you want to send people to and copy the whole address from your browser's address bar, starting with http:// or https://.
Add a Vanity Link
- Go to Content > Configurations > Vanity Links.
- In Domain, choose the domain the short address will use. Your main domain is already selected.
- Click Add Vanity URL.
- In Vanity Name, type the word that goes after your domain, for example spring. Use only letters, numbers, dashes and underscores, up to 50 characters.
- In Destination URL, paste the full address the link should open, starting with http:// or https:// (up to 250 characters).
- Click Add.
What you'll see: "The Vanity URL was successfully created." The list shows the link's Vanity Name, its Vanity URL (your domain followed by the name) and its Destination URL.
Test it
- In the list, click the address in the Vanity URL column. It opens in a new tab.
- Check that the tab shows the page you meant.
- Type the short address into a new browser tab too, the way your members will, for example yourleague.org/spring.
Change or delete a Vanity Link
A Vanity Link can't be edited. To change one, delete it and add it again:
- On Vanity Links, choose the Domain to see its links.
- Click the red X on the link's row and click OK on "Are you sure you want to delete this vanity url?".
- Add the link again with the new details, as above.
If it doesn't work
- "Vanity Name is required." or "Destination URL is required." Fill in both before you click Add.
- "Vanity Name can only contain letters, numbers, dash, and underscore characters." Remove spaces, slashes, periods and other symbols from the name.
- "http:// or https:// in URL is required." Paste the full address, starting with http:// or https://.
- Add Vanity URL is grayed out. Your organization has no domain of its own set up for this website. Contact TeamSideline Support.
- The short address shows your website's page instead of the destination, or a page-not-found error. Type it exactly as listed, with nothing after the name: yourleague.org/spring works, but yourleague.org/spring/ and yourleague.org/spring/info don't. Also check that you're typing the domain you chose in Domain: each Vanity Link works only on its own domain.
- The browser says the page redirected too many times. The Destination URL is the Vanity Link's own address. Delete it and add it again with the real destination.
- Your domain doesn't load at all. See Why isn't my website loading? (custom domain or site down).
- You can't find Vanity Links in the menu. Vanity Links is part of the Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise plans, and your admin role must include it. Websites built with Editor 2.0 don't have it (see below).
Good to know
- Don't use the name of one of your website's own pages, such as home, calendar, schedules, news or contact. A Vanity Link with that name takes over that page's address on your domain, so visitors are sent to the destination instead of the page.
- Capital letters don't matter: yourleague.org/Spring and yourleague.org/spring open the same link.
- Each Vanity Link belongs to the domain you chose. If more than one of your domains opens your website, add the link to each one you want it on. A domain that only forwards to your main one isn't in the Domain list, and it forwards visitors without using Vanity Links.
- Use each name only once per domain. The page doesn't stop you adding the same name twice, so delete any duplicate.
- If the destination is one of your own custom pages, keep that page's name: renaming a custom page changes its address, and the Vanity Link keeps sending people to the old one.
- Vanity Links work only while your domain opens your legacy TeamSideline website. When your domain moves to an Editor 2.0 website, visitors to it no longer reach TeamSideline's Vanity Links; Editor 2.0 websites set up redirects in the Site Editor instead (see CMS: Find, share or change a page's URL (and add a redirect)).
