If a change in the Site Editor went wrong, you can put your Editor 2.0 website back the way it was by restoring a site backup from before the change. Restoring replaces everything changed in the Site Editor since that backup, and visitors see the restored version once you republish.
Applies to: Org admins with Site Editor access · All plans, for organizations with Editor 2.0 (the CMS module) · Editor 2.0 (CMS)
Where: Content > Site Editor > More > Site Backup
Before you restore
- Just made the change? Click Undo (the curved left arrow at the top of the editor) to step back one change at a time while you're still editing. Undo needs no backup and keeps the rest of your work.
- Haven't republished yet? Your live website still shows the version you last published: changes go live only when you click Republish. Visitors aren't affected while you fix it.
- Is it hidden rather than deleted? Look for it in Layers in the left sidebar, and check the desktop, tablet and phone views at the top of the editor: an element can be hidden on one kind of device only. Showing it again is quicker than restoring a backup.
- Restoring goes back for everything. Every change made in the Site Editor after that backup is lost, on every page, including changes other admins made. Note what you'll need to redo.
Restore a backup
- Go to Content > Site Editor.
- In the left sidebar, click More, then Site Backup.
- Find the backup from just before the change. Backups are listed by date and time.
- To keep a way back to how the website is now, create a backup of the current version first.
- Restore the backup you chose, and confirm.
- Check the pages that changed in the desktop, tablet and phone views, and click Preview to see them as visitors will.
- Click Republish, the orange button in the top-right corner, to put the restored version on your live website.
What you'll see: the Site Editor shows your website as it was when the backup was made. After you republish, visitors see that version too.
What a backup restores, and what it doesn't
| Part of your website | After you restore a backup |
|---|---|
| Pages, text, pictures, sections, the menu, layout and theme you edit in the Site Editor | Back to how they were when the backup was made. |
| Changes made in the Site Editor after that backup | Lost. Redo the ones you want to keep. |
| What the TeamSideline sections show: programs and registration, schedules and standings, calendar events, Downloads, Entry Forms, Store and Donations items, policies and locations | Unchanged. This information comes from your admin site, not from the Site Editor, so a backup can't bring back a deleted program, event or download, or undo a change to one. Fix it, or add it again, in your admin site. |
| Your web address | Unchanged. |
If it doesn't work
- You don't see Site Backup under More. Close the editor and open it again from Content > Site Editor: TeamSideline refreshes your editor access each time you open it there. If it's still missing, contact TeamSideline Support.
- Site Editor isn't in your Content menu, or it won't open. See CMS: Accessing the Editor, linked below.
- The restored version isn't on your live website. Open the Site Editor and click Republish, then reload your website in a private (incognito) browser window.
- A program, calendar event or download is still missing. A backup doesn't hold that information. Check it, or add it again, in your admin site; for example, calendar events are at Content > Calendar.
- Your header or menu is missing only on phones. Switch the editor to the phone view and check whether it's hidden there before you restore anything. If it isn't, restore a backup from before it disappeared, or ask TeamSideline Support.
- There's no backup from before the change. Contact TeamSideline Support before you make more changes, and say which pages changed and roughly when.
Good to know
- TeamSideline Support can restore a backup for you, for example yesterday's version when a day's changes went wrong. Tell them the date and time to go back to: everything changed in the Site Editor after it is lost.
- Backups are part of the Site Editor access TeamSideline sets up each time you open Content > Site Editor. Working with code, connecting a domain, the website builder's own online store and resetting the whole website stay with TeamSideline staff.
- A backup only goes back to an earlier version of your Editor 2.0 website. Once your Editor 2.0 website is live, TeamSideline doesn't move it back to the legacy content editor.
