To greet visitors with a larger message, such as a registration announcement with a button that takes them to sign up, create a Pop-Up Message personalization rule in the Site Editor and then republish your site. Editor 2.0 has no Splash Page: a pop-up rule replaces it and lets you choose who sees it, on which pages and when.
Applies to: Org admins with Site Editor access · All plans, for organizations with Editor 2.0 (the CMS module) · Editor 2.0 (CMS)
Where: Content > Site Editor > More > Personalize
A pop-up suits information visitors should see before they go on through your site: registration opening or closing, season announcements, weather or emergency updates, tryout information, important program or schedule changes, or a message for one group of visitors.
Create a pop-up message
- On your admin site, go to Content > Site Editor.
- In the editor's left side panel, click More, then click Personalize.
- Click Add Rule and choose Pop-Up Message.
- Under Trigger configurations, choose when and to whom the pop-up appears. You can combine conditions:
- Device used: visitors on desktop or mobile.
- Visitor Location: visitors in a city, region or country.
- Timing: a date range and a repeat schedule.
- Number of visits: how many times someone has visited your site.
- Campaign URL: visitors who arrive through a tracked marketing link.
- From the action options, choose Show Pop-Up Message.
- Build the pop-up: type your message and add a title, description, button, image or other content.
- Choose the page or pages the pop-up appears on.
- Set how and when it appears.
- Click Preview to see it the way visitors will.
- Click Next and enter a Rule name you'll recognize later.
- If returning visitors shouldn't see the pop-up again, turn on Show once per visitor.
- Click Activate to turn the rule on, or Save as Draft to finish it later.
- Click Republish. Visitors don't see the pop-up until you do.
What you'll see
After you republish, visitors who match the rule see the pop-up over the page they opened. For example, a pop-up titled "Fall Registration Opens September 20" might say who can register and include a Register Now button that opens your registration page.
A visitor who has seen the pop-up doesn't see it again for 30 minutes, or until they clear their browser cache. With Show once per visitor on, they see it only once.
The rule is listed in the Personalize panel, where its three-dot menu lets you preview, edit, pause or delete it.
Change, pause or remove a pop-up
- Go to Content > Site Editor.
- In the left side panel, click More, then click Personalize.
- Find the Pop-Up Message rule and click the three-dot menu next to it.
- Choose Edit to change it, Activate/Deactivate to turn it on or off, or Delete to remove it.
- Click Republish. Until you do, your live website keeps showing the pop-up as it was.
Test a rule before visitors see it
Rules don't run while you look at your site in the editor's preview. To see the pop-up in action, click the three-dot menu next to the rule and choose Preview.
If it doesn't work
- The pop-up doesn't appear on your live website. Republish after you create or change a rule. Then check that the rule is active (not a draft or deactivated), that its timing includes today, and that your device, location and number of visits match its triggers.
- You can't see the pop-up in the editor's preview. Rules don't trigger there. Use Preview from the rule's three-dot menu.
- The pop-up showed once and doesn't come back. That's expected: a visitor doesn't see a rule again for 30 minutes, or until they clear their browser cache, and never again if Show once per visitor is on.
- A different pop-up shows instead of yours. When more than one active rule could show a pop-up on the same page at the same time, the rule listed higher in the Personalize panel wins. Drag the rules to change their order.
- Visitors see a message before your website, once per visit, and it's gone after a click or a refresh. That's the legacy Splash Page, on a website that still uses the legacy content editor (for example, while your new website is in preview). It shows the first time someone opens your site in a browser session. To change or remove it, go to Content > Splash Page Edit on your legacy Content menu, edit the message or set Enabled? to No, and click Save.
Good to know
- The Splash Page is legacy only. Content > Splash Page Edit is on the legacy content editor's Content menu. The Editor 2.0 Content menu, the one with Site Editor, has no splash page, so a Pop-Up Message rule does the same job.
- What changes when you switch. The legacy Splash Page showed on the first page a visitor opened in each browser session, until its Show Until Day/Time. A pop-up rule adds triggers, a choice of pages and Show once per visitor.
- Before and after go-live. Until your new website goes live, visitors still see your current website, including its Splash Page if it's turned on. Once the new website is live, visits to your old website go to the new one, so the legacy Splash Page no longer shows.
- Popups in the Pages panel. The Site Editor's Pages panel has a Popups list too. A popup made there can be opened from a button instead, so it appears only when someone clicks.
- Pop-up or Top Bar? For a short notice that shouldn't interrupt visitors, such as a rainout, use a Top Bar message: see CMS: Post an announcement banner on your website (Top Bar message for rainouts and deadlines).
- Who can create rules. Any admin who can open the Site Editor can create rules and republish. If Site Editor isn't on your Content menu, see CMS: How to open the Site Editor (and what to do if you can't).
