Editor 2.0 has no News Items. Content > News Items belongs to the legacy content editor, your Editor 2.0 website can't show those items, and nothing in Editor 2.0 posts a news item and takes it down by date on its own. Post news in the Site Editor instead: a Top Bar or pop-up message with start and stop dates for short-lived notices, a page section or blog post for news you keep, and calendar events for dated events. Republish after each change.
Applies to: Org admins with Site Editor access · All plans, for organizations with Editor 2.0 (the CMS module) · Editor 2.0 (CMS)
Where: Content > Site Editor (Top Bar and pop-up messages: More > Personalize); Content > Calendar (events)
What changes from News Items
| On the legacy website | On Editor 2.0 |
|---|---|
| News items listed on a News page, and on your home page when Show on Home Page was checked | Text and image sections you add to a page in the Site Editor, or blog posts |
| Show Until took an item down at a set date and time | A Top Bar or pop-up message stops at the end of its Timing dates. Everything else stays until you remove it. |
| Display Date showed the item's date | Type the date into your text or heading |
| A News Item image, linked with Image Link Type | An image in the section, linked to a page or another website |
| Items entered in Content > News Items | Not carried over as news items. Rebuild the ones you want to keep. |
Choose how to post it
| What you want to post | Use | Ends on its own? |
|---|---|---|
| A short notice for a few hours or days, such as a rainout or a registration deadline | A Top Bar message | Yes, at the end of the dates you set |
| An important announcement with a picture or a button, such as registration opening | A pop-up message | Yes, at the end of the dates you set |
| News to keep on your site, such as a season recap or a board announcement | A section on your home page or a News page, or a blog post | No: update or remove it yourself |
| A dated event, such as tryouts or picture day | A calendar event in Content > Calendar | It leaves the upcoming events list after its date |
| News every family must see | An email or text from Communications > Send Communication | Not on your website |
Post a notice with start and stop dates
- Go to Content > Site Editor.
- Click More in the left sidebar, then Personalize.
- Click Add Rule and choose Top Bar Message or Pop-Up Message.
- Under Trigger configurations, choose Timing and set the dates the message should show.
- Choose Show Top Bar Message or Show Pop-Up Message, type your message and choose the pages it appears on.
- Click Next, give the rule a name you'll recognize and click Activate.
- Click Republish.
For every option, including showing a message only once per visitor, see CMS: Using Personalization Rules on Your TeamSideline Site.
A popup can also open only when someone clicks a button. In the Pages panel, open Popups and click + New Popup to build it, then link a button to it in the button's content settings. A popup made this way has no dates, so remove the button when the news is over.
Post news you keep
- Go to Content > Site Editor and open your home page, or the page where your news goes.
- Click Add (+) in the left sidebar and add a section with a heading, text and, if you like, an image. Or click the news section that's already there and edit it.
- Put the newest news first, and type its date into the heading or text.
- Click Republish.
To give news a page of its own, add a page first: see CMS: Site Pages. Nothing takes this news down by date, so update or remove old items when you post new ones.
For a dated archive, such as season recaps, use a blog: each post is its own page. Site Editor access includes the editor's blog tools, and the How to Manage Your Blog video in CMS: Introduction to Editor 2.0 shows how they work.
Post dated events on your calendar
Add tryouts, picture day, a parent meeting or a fundraiser as an event at Content > Calendar, not in the Site Editor. Your website's calendar shows each visible event, and an upcoming events list shows events from today on, so each event drops off after its date without you removing it. For the steps, see CMS: Add and edit calendar events on your website.
Rainouts and other same-day notices
- On your website: a Top Bar message with today's date is the quickest way. You can also edit the text in a section on your home page and republish.
- On your schedule: your website's schedules come from your TeamSideline schedule, so update the games there too.
- To reach families: a notice on your website doesn't notify anyone. Send an email or text from Communications > Send Communication.
What you'll see
After you republish, visitors see your new section or blog post right away. A Top Bar or pop-up message shows only between the dates you set, on the pages you chose, and only to visitors who match its rule.
If it doesn't work
- Your news isn't on your live website. Click Republish. Site Editor changes reach visitors only after you republish.
- A Top Bar or pop-up message doesn't show. Check that the rule is active (not a draft or deactivated) and that today falls inside its Timing dates, then republish. Rules don't run in the editor's preview: use Preview in the rule's three-dot menu instead.
- A message showed once and then didn't come back. A visitor who has seen a rule doesn't see it again for 30 minutes, or until they clear their browser's cache.
- An old message is still showing. Change the rule's stop date, or deactivate or delete the rule, and republish.
- Your old news items aren't on your new website. News items don't carry over. Copy the ones you want into a section or blog post. If you can no longer open your old website to copy them, contact TeamSideline Support.
- News you added at Content > News Items doesn't show. That page feeds only the legacy website, which visitors stop seeing once your new website is live. Post it in the Site Editor instead.
Good to know
- Two Content menus. While your organization moves to Editor 2.0, you may see two Content menus. The one with Page Edit, Home Page Banner and News Items is the legacy content editor's; the one with Site Editor is Editor 2.0's.
- Who can post. Any admin who can open the Site Editor can add sections, blog posts and Top Bar or pop-up messages, and republish. Calendar events need Content > Calendar on your menu.
