A division's scoring settings, such as how many scores each game has, how results count in the standings, its tie breakers and Auto Coach Scoring, are on its 1 Configuration > Scoring page. Schedules > Configurations > Sport Defaults holds the settings each sport's new divisions start with, for scoring and everything else. Changing Sport Defaults doesn't change the divisions you already have.
Applies to: Admins and schedulers · All plans (Track Sportsmanship, Consolidated Standings and Auto Coach Scoring: Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise) · League and tournament divisions
Where: Schedules > Leagues & Divisions > (division) > More Options > 1 Configuration > Scoring, and Schedules > Configurations > Sport Defaults
Open and save the Scoring page
- Go to Schedules > Leagues & Divisions.
- Open the division's More Options menu and choose 1 Configuration > Scoring. Tournament divisions use the same page.
- Change the settings and click Save.
What you'll see: "Division configuration updated." Saving recalculates the division's standings and refreshes a playoff bracket seeded by standings, so the change shows right away.
Game Scoring Configuration
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| # of Scores per Game | 1 to 7. Use more than 1 for sports played in sets or games, such as 3 for a best-of-3 volleyball match. It's set for each division, not for the league. |
| How Winner is Calc'd | Count all Scores: each set of scores counts as its own win, loss or tie, so a three-set match adds three results to the standings. Best of Series: the team that wins more of the sets wins the match, which counts as one result. Points for and against add up every score either way. |
Advanced Scoring Configurations
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Standings Method | GB/Pts. ranks teams first by Games Back (or by points, in sports ranked on points or with a Custom Pts Config.), then uses the tie breakers. Bypass skips that first ranking, so the tie breakers set the whole order. |
| Custom Pts Config. | Default, or one of your Custom Points configurations (Schedules > Configurations > Custom Points), which ranks teams by the points you give for wins, ties, losses and more. |
| Forfeit Opponent Points (Runs or Goals, depending on the sport) | 0 to 99. In a forfeit, the winning team gets this many points for and the forfeiting team this many against. A double forfeit adds it to both teams, for and against. These totals feed the points-for, points-against and differential tie breakers. |
| Max Differential Points | N/A, or 1 to 99: "Maximum differential points used in tie breaker calculations." With 10, a 25–5 win counts as 15–5 in those tie breakers. N/A counts the full margin. |
| Track Sportsmanship | Yes adds a Sportsmanship points entry for each team on Edit Scores and Multi Division Scoring. To show the totals, add the Sportsmanship (SP) or Avg Sportsman (ASP) column to a custom standings layout. Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise. |
| Exclude Games | With Count all Scores and more than one score per game, Yes leaves out 0–0 scores after the first one, such as a third set that wasn't needed, so they don't count as ties or games played. |
| Consolidated Standings | Yes includes 1st Half games in the 2nd Half standings. Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise. |
| Playoff in Standings | Yes counts playoff games in the regular-season standings. |
| Exclude Cross Division | Yes leaves cross-division games out of the standings. |
Tie Breakers
Under Standings Calculation Configuration, drop-downs 1 to 8 set the order used to separate teams that are still tied after the first ranking ("Choose the order that Standings ties are resolved."). Fill them from 1 with no gaps and no repeats, and leave the rest at Not Used. For what each tie breaker compares, see Tie Breakers.
Auto Coach Scoring Configuration
This section is on the Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise plans. With it turned on, each team gets an email with a Score This Game link after its games.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Enabled | Yes turns Auto Coach Scoring on for the division. |
| Which Team Scores Game | Both Teams (the two scores must match to post), Either Team, Home Team or Away Team. |
| Who Scores Game | Team Contact (the team's contact and alternate email on 2 Teams) or All Staff (also the Coach and Assistant Coach on the team's roster). |
| 1st Request | 0 to 5 days after the game starts (0 = shortly after the game starts). |
| 2nd Request and 3rd Request | Check Yes, send reminder email and choose 1 to 5 days after the previous request. A 3rd Request needs a 2nd. |
| Auto Accept One Score | Shown with Both Teams. Check Yes, post scores to post the score one team sent, 1 to 5 days after the last request, when the other team hasn't sent one. Regular-season and 2nd Half games only. |
| Lock Scoring | The number of days after the game starts when the Score This Game link stops taking scores (0 = no lock). You can still enter scores on Edit Scores. |
| Collect Stats | Yes adds stat entry to the coach's scoring page. The division's stats must be set up first. |
| Show Custom Fields | Yes shows the answers to your Auto Coach Scoring custom fields, such as pitch counts, with each game on the public schedule. |
Requests go out for regular-season, 2nd Half and playoff games, including tournament pool play and bracket games once both teams are known, for games played in the last 15 days. Games in a TBD time slot don't get one. For when the emails go out and who gets them, see When do the auto-coach scoring emails get sent?
Sport Defaults: the starting settings for new divisions
Sport Defaults keeps one set of division settings for each sport. A new division starts with the set for its league's sport when you add it on Leagues & Divisions, when Copy Season copies a league, when a registration program creates a division, and when the League Schedules import creates one. Divisions you already have keep their own settings.
- Go to Schedules > Configurations > Sport Defaults.
- Choose the Sport Type. The page opens on Baseball.
- Change the settings and click Save.
What you'll see: "The division default configuration has been created." the first time you save a sport, and "The division default configuration has been updated." after that. Each sport is saved on its own.
| Section | What new divisions get |
|---|---|
| Division Schedule Types | Regular (always on), 2nd Half, Playoff and Practice. |
| Division Schedule Configurations | Schedule Week (Sun - Sat or Mon - Sun; Mon - Sun keeps a Saturday and the next Sunday in the same week), Games per Week/Team (1, 2 or Custom; add any further games one at a time with Add Game on 4 Create Schedule), 2 Game Configuration, Rest Period, Games Played/Team, Game Spacing (the length of each game slot: set it to the game's length plus any break before the next game), If Odd # of Teams... (Schedule Byes or All Teams Play Every Week) and Optimization Priority. |
| Playoff Configurations | Playoff Type, Playoff Seed Method and # of Playoff Teams: choose all three, or leave all three at N/A. |
| Division Scoring Attributes | The scoring settings above, including the Tie Breaker Order. |
| Auto Coach Scoring Configuration | The Auto Coach Scoring settings above, except Collect Stats. |
| Stat Configurations | The Stats Template, or No Stats. |
| Display Configurations | What the public Standings & Results page shows, such as Show Scores, Show Standings, Show Byes and Show Playoff Brackets. |
| Standings Page Section and Column Names | Your own names for sections such as Standings and Schedule, and for Home and Away (Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise). |
| Calendar | League calendar colors (Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise). |
| Communication Configurations | The game-change and practice-change emails: On Practice Change, On Game Change, Send To, Include Rosters and, where they apply, Include Officials and Include Location Contacts. |
To change divisions you already have, open each one's 1 Configuration pages. On the Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise plans, Update Multiple Divisions on Leagues & Divisions changes many divisions at once.
If it doesn't work
- "A Best of Series scoring type must have more than one set of scores." Set # of Scores per Game to 2 or more, or choose Count all Scores.
- "3rd Request is only applicable if 2nd Request is selected." Check the 2nd Request too, or clear the 3rd.
- "Lock Scoring is required." Enter a number of days, or 0 for no lock.
- A message that starts "Review the Tie Breaker section:" A tie breaker is chosen after a Not Used, or the same one is chosen twice. Fill the drop-downs in order from 1, each tie breaker once.
- "Please remove retired tie breakers from your tie breaker list prior to saving." Replace the retired tie breaker with another one.
- A Sport Defaults message that starts "The Division Playoff section has 3 configurations" Choose a Playoff Type, Playoff Seed Method and # of Playoff Teams, or set all three to N/A.
- A setting is grayed out with an upgrade icon ("This feature is part of an upgraded package."). Your plan doesn't include it.
- Everything is grayed out and there's no Save button. The league is archived.
- A new division didn't get your defaults. Sport Defaults apply only to divisions created after you save them, and only for the league's sport. Check which Sport Type you saved, and change the division on its own 1 Configuration pages.
Good to know
- Copy Season gives the copied divisions your Sport Defaults, not the settings of the divisions you copied. Check the new divisions before you build their schedules.
- Sport Defaults has no Day of First Game. Set it on each division's 1 Configuration > Scheduling page.
- On a division, Schedule Week can't be changed once a regular, 2nd Half or playoff schedule exists; delete the schedule first. A Sport Defaults change never reaches it.
- With Count all Scores and more than one score per game, a forfeit counts as one win and one loss per score; with Best of Series it counts once. Either way, the Forfeit Opponent value is added to points for and against only once per forfeited game, not once per score.
- Best of Series doesn't work for Golf and Disc Golf, where the lowest score wins: use Count all Scores.
- For the settings on 1 Configuration > Scheduling, see Understanding Schedule Configurations.
