A Custom Points configuration decides how many points each result earns in a division's standings, and the division is then ranked by those points. Create the configuration on Schedules > Configurations > Custom Points, then choose it in Custom Pts Config. on the division's 1 Configuration > Scoring page.
Applies to: Admins and schedulers · All plans (Update Multiple Divisions: Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise) · League and tournament divisions
Where: Schedules > Configurations > Custom Points, then Schedules > Leagues & Divisions > (division) > More Options > 1 Configuration > Scoring
Step 1: Create a Custom Points configuration
- Go to Schedules > Configurations > Custom Points. The page lists your configurations by Custom Points Name and Description.
- Click Add Custom Points.
- Enter a Custom Points Name of up to 25 characters and, if you like, a Description.
- Enter the points for each result, as described in the table below. Every point box needs a number, so enter 0 in any you don't use.
- Click Save.
What you'll see: "Custom Points Configuration saved." and the Custom Points list with your configuration on it.
What each box does
| Box | Points it gives |
|---|---|
| Win | To the winner of a game that's Played. |
| Tie | To both teams in a tied game. |
| Loss | To the loser of a game that's Played. |
| Forfeit Win | To the team whose opponent forfeited (Forfeit by home or Forfeit by away). |
| Forfeit Loss | To the team that forfeited. |
| Double Forfeit | To both teams in a Double forfeit. |
| Per Goal/Run/Point | For each goal, run or point a team scores in a game, up to Max Points For. |
| Max Points For | The most Per Goal/Run/Point points a team can earn from one game. At 0, Per Goal/Run/Point adds nothing. |
| Shutout | To a team that wins without allowing a score. Check "Both teams get shutout points on zero/zero game" to give them to every team whose opponent doesn't score, so both teams in a 0-0 tie get them. |
| Per Penalty | For each penalty recorded for the team on Edit Penalties (on the division's Standings page). Use a negative number to subtract points. |
| Over Time Loss | To the loser of a game marked Overtime on Edit Scores, in place of the Loss points. The page notes "Hockey only." because only hockey games have the Overtime box. |
Each box takes a number from -100 to 100 with up to two decimals, such as 0.5.
Step 2: Use the configuration in a division
- Go to Schedules > Leagues & Divisions.
- Open the division's More Options menu and choose 1 Configuration > Scoring.
- In Custom Pts Config., choose your configuration.
- Make sure Standings Method is GB/Pts. With Bypass, points don't set the order (see the tie breaker section below).
- Click Save.
What you'll see: "Division configuration updated." If the division already has standings, they're recalculated right away and the teams are ranked by points, highest first.
To use a configuration in more than one division:
- New divisions of a sport: go to Schedules > Configurations > Sport Defaults, choose the Sport Type, set Custom Pts Config. and click Save. Only divisions created after that get it.
- Existing divisions (Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise plans): on Schedules > Leagues & Divisions, click Update Multiple Divisions, choose the Update Type Configuration, check the divisions, set Custom Pts Config. under Division Scoring Attributes and click Update. Each division's standings change the next time they're recalculated.
Go back to Default
To stop using a configuration, choose Default in Custom Pts Config. on the division's Scoring page and click Save. Default is TeamSideline's built-in ranking:
- Soccer and Indoor Soccer are ranked by points: 3 for a win, 1 for a tie and 3 for a forfeit win.
- Hockey is ranked by points: 2 for a win, 1 for an overtime loss and 2 for a forfeit win.
- Golf and Disc Golf are ranked by points: 1 for a win and 0.5 for a tie (the lowest score wins).
- Every other sport, Futsal included, is ranked by Games Back.
- Default gives no points for goals, shutouts or penalties, so penalties entered on Edit Penalties don't change the standings.
How Custom Points work with tie breakers
- With a Custom Pts Config., teams are ranked by their point totals first. The division's Tie Breakers 1 to 8, on the same Scoring page, only separate teams with the same total.
- So a tie breaker such as Head-To-Head never puts a team above one with more points. If your tie breakers seem to be ignored, the teams involved don't have the same points.
- With Standings Method set to Bypass, points don't set the order at all, even with a Custom Pts Config.: every team starts tied and the tie breakers rank them.
- The retired Total Calculated Points tie breaker doesn't use Custom Points, and the Scoring page won't save while it's chosen: "Please remove retired tie breakers from your tie breaker list prior to saving."
- To see why each team is where it is, click Tie Breaker Analysis on the division's Standings page.
Change or delete a configuration
- To change one, click its Edit icon on the Custom Points page, change the points and click Save. Every division that uses it changes too, but only when its standings are next recalculated. To update a division now, open its Standings page, click Edit Scores, then Standings Update Only.
- To delete one, click its Delete icon (red X) and click OK to confirm. The red X is hidden while any division uses the configuration, including divisions in archived leagues.
- The red X doesn't check Sport Defaults, so before you delete a configuration, open Schedules > Configurations > Sport Defaults and set any sport that uses it back to Default.
If it doesn't work
- "Custom Points Name field is required." Enter a name.
- "Duplicate Custom Point Names are not allowed." Another configuration already has that name; capitals don't make it different. Choose another name.
- "Win field is required." (or the same message for another box, such as "Max Goal Points field is required."). A point box is empty. Enter 0 for any result you don't want to score.
- The standings didn't change after you edited the configuration. Edits apply at the next recalculation. Click Standings Update Only on the division's Edit Scores page.
- The standings don't follow the points. On the division's Scoring page, check that Custom Pts Config. shows your configuration and Standings Method is GB/Pts. Only games that are Played or forfeited count, and a game with Hide in Standings checked counts for neither team.
- Goals add no points. Max Points For is 0, or lower than you meant. It caps each team's goal points per game.
- Penalties don't change the points. The configuration's Per Penalty is 0, or the division uses Default.
- Custom Pts Config. is grayed out and there's no Save button. The league is archived, and its settings can't be changed.
- Custom Points isn't under Schedules > Configurations. Your admin role doesn't include it. Ask your organization's main admin.
Good to know
- One configuration can be used by any number of divisions, in any sport.
- With more than one score per game (# of Scores per Game) and How Winner is Calc'd set to Count all Scores, each set of scores earns its own Win, Tie or Loss points, goal points and shutout points, and a forfeit earns its forfeit points once for each set. With Best of Series, a game earns one Win, Tie or Loss and no goal, shutout or overtime points.
- A team with no counted games has 0 points. Its penalties count from its first counted game.
- Edit Standings on the Standings page sets places by hand, but only until the standings are next recalculated.
- The columns the standings show come from the division's Standings Layout on 1 Configuration > Display. They don't change the order.
