To create a survey, go to Communications > Surveys, click Add Survey, name the survey and click Add. Then add your questions with the Add Question icon, and give each Single Selection question at least two answer values. A new survey stays in Draft until you publish it.
Applies to: Org admins · Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise plans · Legacy content editor websites
Where: Communications > Surveys
Before you start
- If your organization's Editor 2.0 website is live, survey links open your new website's home page instead of the survey, so people can't answer it. Build a form on your new website instead. See CMS: Legacy Survey Feature Sunset: Why Your Survey Links Redirect and What to Use Instead.
- Replies are anonymous: your results don't show who answered. If you need to know, add a question that asks for a name or email address.
- Finish your questions before you publish. Once a survey is published, the Surveys page no longer lets you rename it or add questions.
Create the survey
- Go to Communications > Surveys.
- Click Add Survey.
- In Survey Name, type a name of up to 25 characters. Each survey needs its own name.
- Click Add.
What you'll see: "The Survey has been added. You can now add Survey Questions for (survey name) by clicking the Add Question button below." The survey is listed with the status Draft.
Add a question
- On the survey's row, click the Add Question icon
(a green plus). The Add New Questions form opens under the survey.
- In Question, type the question, up to 250 characters.
- In Type of Question, choose one:
- Single Selection: people pick one answer from the values you add, shown as round option buttons. For example, "Which day is best for practice?" with the values Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
- Comment: people type their own answer in a text box.
- Check Required? if people must answer this question before they can submit the survey.
- Click Add.
Repeat for each question. To change the order, drag a question by the handle at the start of its row.
Add answer values to a Single Selection question
- On the question's row, click the Add Value icon
(a green plus). It's on Single Selection questions only, once the question has been added.
- In Value, type one answer, up to 50 characters.
- Click Add.
- Repeat for each answer. A Single Selection question needs at least two values before the survey can be published.
Drag a value by its handle to change the order, or click the red X next to it to delete it.
Preview the survey
Click the View Survey icon (a magnifying glass) on the survey's row. The page shows the survey the way people will see it. If a Single Selection question has fewer than two values, you'll see "The single selection question (question) has less than two options." and the Publish button stays grayed out. To change anything, go back to Communications > Surveys.
When the survey is ready, publish it from the same page. The steps are in How to publish and share a Survey link (legacy Surveys).
Copy an existing survey
- On Communications > Surveys, click Copy Survey.
- In Survey Name, type the new survey's name.
- In Survey, choose the survey to copy.
- Click Copy.
What you'll see: "The Survey was successfully copied." The copy is a Draft with the same questions, question types, Required settings and answer values, and no replies.
Change or delete a survey
- Rename a draft: click the Edit Survey Name icon on the survey's row.
- Change a question: click its Edit Question icon, change the question, type or Required? setting, and click Save. The red X deletes the question.
- Delete a survey: click the red X on the survey's row and click OK on "Are you sure you want to delete the Survey "(survey name)"?". The survey and its results are removed from your admin site.
If it doesn't work
- "Please complete the 'Survey Name' field." Type a name, then click Add.
- "Duplicate Survey Names are not allowed." Another survey already has that name, ignoring capital letters. Choose a different name.
- "You need to complete the 'Question' field." or "You need to select a value from the 'Type of Question' list." Type the question and choose Single Selection or Comment.
- "Each question must be unique within a survey." This survey already has a question with the same wording.
- "Please reduce the text you have entered in the 'Question' field. You have entered more than 250 characters." Shorten the question.
- "You need to complete the 'Value' field." or "Duplicate Values are not allowed." The value is blank, or the question already has it. You also see "Duplicate Values are not allowed." if you edit a value and save it unchanged, or change only its capital letters. Click Cancel instead, or delete the value and add it again.
- "New Survey Name required.", "Survey to Copy required." or "New Survey Name cannot be the same as the Survey To Copy." When copying, type a new name and choose the survey to copy.
- There's no Add Question or Edit Survey Name icon. The survey is no longer a draft. To change a published survey, copy it and publish the copy.
- Surveys isn't under Communications. Surveys is part of the Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise plans, and your role needs to include it. Ask an admin with the Administrator role.
Good to know
- Don't edit or delete questions or answer values after people have replied. The page still allows it, but your results would no longer match what people answered. Copy the survey and publish the copy instead.
- TeamSideline's current plans don't include a player evaluation feature. For feedback such as coach or player evaluations, use a survey with a Comment question that asks which player or coach the reply is about.
