To see a survey's results, go to Communications > Surveys and click the survey's View Survey icon (a magnifying glass). Each question shows how many people chose each answer, and View Detail steps through the replies one at a time. To get every reply in a spreadsheet, export the Survey Detail report from Reports > Report Exports.
Applies to: Org admins · Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise plans · Legacy content editor websites
Where: Communications > Surveys > View Survey (magnifying glass); Reports > Report Exports > Survey Detail
See the results
- Go to Communications > Surveys.
- On the survey's row, click the View Survey icon
(a magnifying glass).
What you'll see: each question, numbered, with its results.
- Single Selection questions list every answer choice with the percentage and the number of people who chose it. "Responded:" shows how many people answered the question, and the percentages are out of that number.
- Comment questions show "Click here to view responses." Click it to see every typed answer under Responses, and click Back to return.
A Published survey's results grow as replies come in. A Closed survey's page shows its final results.
Step through each reply
- On the survey's View Survey page, click View Detail. It appears once the survey has at least one reply.
- Drag the slider's handle, or use the arrows at its ends, to move from one reply to the next. The box beside the slider shows which reply you're looking at.
- Click View Survey to go back to the totals.
What you'll see: every question with that reply's answers. Replies are numbered in the order they were sent in, oldest first.
Export the replies (Survey Detail report)
- Go to Reports > Report Exports and click Survey Detail.
- In Survey Name, choose the survey.
- Under Survey Questions, every question is selected. To export only some, click one question, then Ctrl-click the others you want.
- To export only replies from certain dates, set the Response Date Range.
- Under Columns, move at least one field, such as the survey name or the response date, from "Available fields:" to "Show these fields in this order:". The questions you selected are added after them.
- Choose an Export Type: Excel (xlsx), CSV, Html or Tab (legacy).
- Click Export.
What you'll see: a file with one row for each reply. It has the fields you chose, then one column for each selected question, headed by the question's text, with the answer that was chosen or typed. Save Report keeps your choices for next time, and Reset clears them.
Close a survey
To stop taking replies, click Close on the View Survey page and click OK on "Are you sure you want to close this Survey and not allow any more responses?". You'll see "This survey has been closed." Its results are final until you reopen it; see How to reopen or resend a Survey (legacy Surveys).
If it doesn't work
- There's no View Detail button. The survey has no replies yet.
- You see the questions with answer buttons and a Publish Survey button instead of results. The survey is still a draft. Publish it; see How to publish and share a Survey link (legacy Surveys).
- "There are no comments to display." Nobody has typed an answer to that question yet.
- "Please make a selection for Survey Name." Choose the survey, then click Export.
- "You must select at least one Field before exporting report." Move at least one field into "Show these fields in this order:". Selected questions alone aren't enough.
- "The Start date cannot fall after the End date." Fix the Response Date Range.
- The file has no rows. The survey has no replies in that date range. Clear the dates and export again.
- Replies stopped after your Editor 2.0 website went live. Survey links now open your new home page; see CMS: Legacy Survey Feature Sunset: Why Your Survey Links Redirect and What to Use Instead.
- You can't open Surveys or the Survey Detail report. Your admin role doesn't include Surveys or Report Exports, or your plan doesn't include Surveys (Enhanced, Elite and Enterprise do). Ask an admin who manages users.
Good to know
- Replies are anonymous: View Survey, View Detail and the Survey Detail report show only the answers, not who gave them, even for a survey emailed with one reply per person. To know who answered, add a Comment question that asks for a name or email address.
- An anonymous survey's link takes any number of replies, more than one from the same person included, and every reply is counted.
- Avoid changing questions or answer choices once replies come in. Earlier answers show under the new wording, a deleted question's answers disappear from the results and the export, and a deleted answer choice drops out of the list while its replies still count in "Responded:".
- A copied survey's replies are counted on their own. To combine two surveys, export each one and add them together.
- If your organization's Editor 2.0 website is live, your past surveys and their results stay on Communications > Surveys, and you can still view and export them.
