Moving your website from the legacy content editor to Editor 2.0 is included in your TeamSideline subscription. You pick a template, TeamSideline's Content Team builds a preview of your new website, you review and edit it, and it goes live on a date you agree. Your programs, registrations, schedules and other admin data don't change, and your current website stays as it is until go-live.
Applies to: Org admins · All plans · Organizations on the legacy content editor moving to Editor 2.0 (CMS)
Where: Template Chooser (templatechooser1.teamsidelinesite.com); Content > Site Editor once your new website is set up
Before you start
- Not sure which editor you have? See CMS: Which website editor do I have? Legacy Content vs. Editor 2.0.
- The legacy content editor is being retired: it gets no new features, and fixes only for critical issues.
- Moving is one way: once your website is live on Editor 2.0, TeamSideline doesn't move it back to the legacy content editor.
Steps
- Go to the Template Chooser, https://templatechooser1.teamsidelinesite.com, pick a template and click Get Started to send your organization's details. You don't have to wait for the Content Team to contact you: signing up here moves you up the queue.
- Tell the Content Team how you want to move your content: they build your new website and you review it, or you get editor access and about two weeks to move your content yourself.
- The Content Team sets up a preview of your new website, at a temporary address such as yourorg.teamsidelinesite.com. It has your pages and menu, your logo, and the sections that show your programs, schedules, calendar and locations, kept close to your current site's look where they can.
- Review the preview and make your changes at Content > Site Editor (see CMS: How to open the Site Editor (and what to do if you can't)). You usually have about two weeks. Until go-live, your legacy Content menu (Page Edit, Home Page Banner and the rest) still changes the website visitors see.
- Agree on a go-live date with the Content Team, for example before your registration opens. To change it, reply to your migration email.
- At go-live, TeamSideline makes your new website live. If you use your own domain, TeamSideline points it at the new website; if your organization manages its own DNS, TeamSideline Support sends you the records to change at your DNS host.
- Check your live website, and republish from the Site Editor after any further changes (see CMS: Saving and Publishing Edits).
What you'll see: until go-live, visitors see your current website, unchanged. After go-live, they see your new website, and links to your old website's pages open its home page.
What transfers and what you rebuild
| Part of your website | After the move |
|---|---|
| Programs and registration, schedules and standings, calendar events, locations, Downloads, Entry Forms, Store and Donations items, policies and the Contact Us form | Nothing to re-enter: they're your admin data, and TeamSideline sections on the new website show them. |
| Your admin site | Stays the same, except the Content menu: Editor 2.0's has Site Editor, Checkout Instructions, Downloads, Calendar, Entry Forms and Configurations (Logo, Site Links). |
| Your pages and menu | TeamSideline creates your pages on the new website and arranges its menu. Standalone and archived pages are kept out of the menu. |
| Page text and pictures, content tables, image rotators, photo galleries and the home page banner | Rebuilt in the Site Editor, by the Content Team or by you. |
| News Items | Editor 2.0 has no News Items page: you post news as page content in the Site Editor. Display Date, Countdown To and Show Until have no equivalent, so take old news down yourself. |
| Links only signed-in members or admins see (Sidebar Links) | Kept at Content > Configurations > Site Links (the Admin & User Secure Links page). |
| Your web address | Your own domain stays the same and moves to the new website at go-live. |
If it doesn't work
- Site Editor isn't in your Content menu. Your new website isn't connected yet, or your admin role doesn't include Site Editor access. See CMS: How to open the Site Editor (and what to do if you can't).
- Page Edit or Home Page Banner changes don't show after go-live. That's expected: visitors are sent to your new website, so edit it in the Site Editor. Calendar, Downloads and Entry Forms changes still show.
- Old text or stray code shows on your new Contact Us page. Before go-live, delete it from Custom Text at Communications > Configurations > Contact Us. After go-live that box is hidden, so ask TeamSideline Support. See CMS: Remove leftover HTML code showing on your Contact Us page after migration.
- Links in saved emails or templates open your new home page. They point at your old website's pages. Insert them again from the Links drop-down, or paste the page's address.
- Part of a page shows View Only. It's locked on purpose. See CMS: Why can't I edit the header, footer or some page text? (View Only and locked areas).
- You need more time before go-live. Reply to your migration email to move the date.
Good to know
- Google Analytics moves into the Site Editor (More > Settings > Google Tools). See CMS: How to add Google Analytics, Tag Manager or Search Console to your website.
- Display problems that only the legacy editor has, and their workarounds until you move, are in Known display problems and limits fixed by moving to Editor 2.0 (Legacy content editor).
