Yes. Admins can read the messages sent in their teams' TeamSideline app chats on the Team Site Chat Log tab of Communications > Communication Logs. The log is read-only, and being an admin doesn't make you a member of any team's chat.
Applies to: Admins whose role includes the Team Site communication logs · All plans · Team sites in your organization's programs and leagues (chat in the TeamSideline app)
Where: Communications > Communication Logs > Team Site Chat Log tab
Read your teams' chat messages
- Go to Communications > Communication Logs.
- Click the Team Site Chat Log tab.
- Set the Date Range. It starts at the last 30 days, through today.
- To narrow the list, type part of a person's name in Sender Name or part of a team's name in Team Name.
- Click Update.
What you'll see: the messages sent in that period, newest first, 50 to a page.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Team Name | The team and the chat: the team's name for its team chat, the team's name followed by "Staff Chat" for its staff chat, and the team's name with the group's name in parentheses for a group chat that members created. Direct messages between team members are listed under the team's name too. |
| Sender Name | The sender's name as it is on the team's roster. |
| Message | The text of the message. |
| Sent | The date and time it was sent, in your organization's time zone. |
To list only staff chats, type Staff Chat in Team Name.
What the log includes
- Your organization's team sites. Each team's team chat, staff chat, group chats and direct messages, for the team sites in your programs and leagues. Messages from people who have since been removed from the team stay in the log.
- Not standalone team sites. Chats on a team site that a coach or parent created in the app aren't in your log.
- Text only. A photo is listed with just the text sent with it, if any. Each emoji reaction is listed as its own row showing only the emoji.
- Edited and deleted messages. The log shows a message's latest text, so an edited message appears as edited. A message deleted in the app disappears from the chat but stays in the log, and the log doesn't mark it as deleted.
- Older messages. The app shows chat history from the first day of the month two months back (from August 1 in October, for example). The log has no such limit: set an earlier Date Range.
Admins and team chats
- Being an admin doesn't add you to any team's chat. The TeamSideline app shows you a team, and its chats, only when you're on that team's roster in a team role such as Coach, Assistant Coach, Manager, Team Parent or Parent.
- If you aren't on its roster, opening a team site from your admin site (Programs > Manage Programs > your program > 5 Team Sites) adds you to it as League Administrator. The app doesn't list a team for someone whose only role on it is League Administrator, so this doesn't put you in the team's chat.
- There's no way to post one message to every team's chat at once, from the admin site or the app. To reach all your teams, email them from Communications > Send Communication, for example with Team Rosters - Current Leagues. Members who opted in to texts can get a text with it.
- You can't post, reply to, edit or delete chat messages from the log, and it has no export.
If it doesn't work
- "Invalid date range." The start date is after the end date, or one of them is empty. Fix the dates and click Update.
- "No chat recipients." No messages match. Widen the Date Range, or clear Sender Name and Team Name. If the team is a standalone team site, its chats aren't in your log.
- A message sent late in the day is missing. The Date Range is matched against the time the message was sent in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is ahead of US time zones, so a message sent in the evening can fall on the next day. Set the end date one day later.
- You don't see the Team Site Chat Log tab. Your admin role doesn't include the Team Site communication logs. Ask an administrator who manages your site's admins to check your roles on Administration > Manage Users.
Good to know
- Emails sent from team sites are on the Team Site Log tab, next to the chat log.
- Team chat happens only in the TeamSideline app: a team site on the web has no chat page in its menu. For news every family must see, send an email from Send Communication, or ask the team's coach to post a team announcement.
