A Content Table shows a list in rows and columns on your website, such as your board members with their roles and email addresses. Create the table in Content > Content Tables: add its columns, then its rows, and put it on a page in Content > Page Edit.
Applies to: Org admins whose role includes Content Tables · All plans · Legacy content editor
Where: Content > Content Tables; Content > Page Edit; Administration > Import Data (Content Table Import)
Before you start
- Decide which page the table goes on. It can go on any page you edit in Page Edit, such as a custom page. To add a new page to your menu first, see How to add a custom page to your site menu (Legacy content editor).
- Plan your columns. Each column has a heading, a type (Text, Email or Link) and a width. Cells can't be merged, so give each piece of information its own column.
Create the table and its columns
- Go to Content > Content Tables.
- Click Add Content Table, type a Content Table Name (up to 50 characters) and click Add. You'll see "The Content Table was successfully created." and the table's edit page opens.
- Click Add Column.
- Type the Column Heading (up to 25 characters), for example Name.
- Choose the Column Type: Text, Email (shown as a link that opens the visitor's email program) or Link (a web address, shown as a link).
- Set the Column Width: how wide the column is on your website, from 1 to 500 pixels. It starts at 100.
- Click Add. The column joins the list, and the sample under "Sample layout based on current configuration" shows how the table will look.
- Add your other columns the same way, then drag them into the order you want.
- Click Save.
What you'll see: "Content Table data has been saved." and the Content Tables list. Columns you add or delete are kept only when you click Save; Cancel leaves without saving them.
Add the rows
- On Content > Content Tables, click the green Modify icon (a small table) on your table's row. It's gray until the table has a column.
- Click Add Row. The row is added at the bottom, with a message such as "Row #1 has been added."
- Type the row's values. In a Link column, type the web address in the Link box and, if you like, the words to show in the Display Name box. Or choose one of your website's pages, files or programs from the Custom Link list instead.
- Add your other rows the same way. Drag a row to move it up or down the table.
- Click Save.
What you'll see: "The rows you entered have been saved." The rows show on every page that has the table.
- Hide a row: click its eye icon, then Save. A green eye shows the row on your website and a red eye hides it. Save a new row once before you hide it.
- Delete a row: click its red X, then Save. Nothing is deleted until you click Save, and Cancel keeps every row.
Put the table on a page
- Go to Content > Page Edit and choose the page in Page to Edit.
- Click where the table should go.
- Click the Content Table button on the toolbar and click your table's name. In the editor view (Switch to Editor), open the Content Tables drop-down instead.
- Click Save.
What you'll see: "Page content updated." In Page Edit, a placeholder picture marks the table's place; your website shows the table itself, in your website's style.
Change or copy a table
- Rename it: click the table's Edit icon (pencil), click Rename Content Table, change the Table Name and click Rename. You'll see "Content Table has been renamed." The page reloads, so save any column changes first.
- Change a column's heading or width: on the edit page, click the column's pencil icon, make the change and click Save in its edit box, then click Save at the bottom of the page.
- Change a column's type: you can't. Delete the column with its red X, add it again with the right type and click Save. The old column's values don't carry over, so enter them again on the Modify page.
- Start a new table from an old one: click Copy Content Table, type the new Content Table Name, choose the Content Table to copy and click Copy. You'll see "The Content Table was successfully copied." Only the columns are copied, not the rows.
- Delete it: click the table's red X and click OK on "Are you sure you want to delete the "(name)" Content Table?". Its rows no longer show on the pages that had it, so take it off those pages in Page Edit too.
Load rows from a file (Content Table Import)
To add many rows at once, import them from a CSV file into a table that already has its columns.
- Go to Administration > Import Data. Find Content Table Import under Content, and download its sample file from the Sample File column.
- Put your column headings in the file's first row, then one line for each table row. Save it as CSV.
- Click Content Table Import. On "Step 1 of 3: Upload File", choose your file, choose your table in Content Table and click Next Step.
- On "Step 2 of 3: Map the Fields", choose the file column for each of your table's columns and click Next Step.
- On "Step 3 of 3: Review and Confirm", click Queue Import.
What you'll see: "Your import has been successfully uploaded and will be processed shortly." The rows are added at the bottom of the table when the import finishes. Its messages are on Administration > Import Data > Status.
- The import only adds rows. It never changes or removes the rows you have, so importing the same file twice adds its rows twice.
- A value isn't loaded when it has more characters than the column's Column Width, or when an email address or web address isn't in a valid format. The row is still added without it, and Status shows a "Value not loaded" message with the reason. Fill it in on the Modify page.
- Link columns get the web address only. Add Display Names on the Modify page.
If it doesn't work
- The Modify icon is gray. The table has no columns yet. Click its Edit icon, add a column and click Save.
- "You must enter a Content Table Name." Type a name, then click Add (or Copy).
- "Invalid Column Heading, they must be unique." Another column already has that heading, whatever the capital letters. Choose a different heading.
- "The format of "(value)" does not appear to be correct on Row (number) for column (heading). Please verify you have entered it correctly." An email address or web address isn't valid. Write a web address like teamsideline.com or https://www.teamsideline.com.
- "You cannot have a link display name without a link for column (heading) on Row (number)." Add the web address, or clear the Display Name.
- "The value you entered for column (heading) on Row (number) is too long." A Text cell holds up to 2,500 characters, and a Display Name up to 200.
- The page shows the placeholder picture instead of the table. The table's code changed when the page was edited. In Page Edit, delete the picture, insert the table again and click Save.
- A row is missing from your website. It's hidden (red eye) or wasn't saved. Show it, or add it again, and click Save.
- You can't open Content Tables. Your admin role doesn't include it. Ask an admin who manages your website.
Good to know
- Each column has one heading, one type and one width. Single cells can't be merged or formatted on their own.
- Collapse On Mobile, on Add Column and in a column's edit box, is saved with the column but doesn't change how the table shows on phones.
- A web address typed without http:// or https:// gets http:// added on your website.
- The same table can go on more than one page. A change in Content Tables shows on all of them without editing the pages again.
- Websites built with Editor 2.0 don't have Content Tables. Once your organization's new website is live, visitors are sent to it, so legacy pages and their tables no longer show.
