Teams sign up for a tournament through a Team Registration program: each team manager registers the team, enters the team name and pays the team fee. When you add the program's offerings, set Auto Placement to Create new Tournament Division, so every team that registers lands in a tournament division that's ready to schedule.
Applies to: Admins · All plans (Tournament divisions need the Tournament module) · Team Registration programs
Where: Programs > Manage Programs > Add Program, then Schedules > Leagues & Divisions
How tournament registration differs from player registration
- You set up a Team Registration program instead of a Youth or Adult Registration program.
- The team manager, an adult, registers and pays for the team. Players don't enroll one by one.
- The manager enters the team name when registering.
- You place teams, not players, in divisions, and those divisions use the Division Type Tournament.
- If you want rosters, set Coach Roster Mgmt to Yes on 1 Setup so managers can enter their players. If every player must register and pay, use Team Registration plus Youth Roster Registration or Team Registration plus Adult Roster Registration instead (Enhanced plan and higher).
Step 1: Create the Team Registration program
- Go to Programs > Manage Programs and click Add Program.
- In Registration Type, choose Team Registration, choose the Sport, and click Next. TeamSideline creates a league for the program.
- Fill in 1 Setup and click Save. For each field, see How to set up a Team Registration program.
Step 2: Add offerings that create tournament divisions
- On 2 Configuration, under Offerings, click Add Offering.
- Enter the Offering (for example, 12U Boys), the Regular Reg. Fee (the team fee) and the Reg. Duration (when teams can register).
- In Auto Placement, choose Create new Tournament Division. To use a Tournament division you've already added to the program's league, choose it instead.
- Click Add. TeamSideline adds a Tournament division named after the offering, and each team that registers for the offering goes into it. Repeat for each age group or level.
- Add any Add-Ons, Enrollment Fields, Terms & Conditions and Coupons, check 3 Preview, and on Manage Programs click the program's red eye icon so registration opens.
Step 3: Schedule the tournament
- Once teams are registered, go to Schedules > Leagues & Divisions. The program's league lists each tournament division with a Tournament icon.
- Click the division's Edit Division icon and set up Pool Play and brackets, as described in How to create a tournament (Tournament division, Pool Play and brackets).
- When registration closes, open the division's 2 Teams page and set each team's Pool with its Edit icon. Then add time slots and create the games.
What you'll see
- A division made by Auto Placement starts as Coed, Youth (Adult in a Team Registration plus Adult Roster Registration program) and Recreation, and it's hidden from your public site. Change its name and attributes on the division's 1 Configuration > Display page. If a division already has the offering's name, the new one gets a * at the end.
- Registered teams appear on the division's 2 Teams page without a Pool until you set one.
If it doesn't work
- Create new Tournament Division isn't in Auto Placement. It's offered only when you add an offering, and only if your organization has the Tournament module. When you edit an existing offering, Auto Placement lists only existing divisions: add the division first on Leagues & Divisions with Add Division, choosing the program's league and the Division Type Tournament.
- Tournament is grayed out in Division Type, with the note "Disabled options are part of an upgraded package." Your organization doesn't have the Tournament module. Contact TeamSideline to add it, then sign out and back in.
- Team Registration is grayed out on Add Program. The current plans include it; an older package needs the Team Registration module. The two Team Registration plus Roster types also need the Enhanced, Elite or Enterprise plan. After TeamSideline adds them, sign out and back in.
- Add Team and Add Placeholders are grayed out on 2 Teams, and the page says they "are disabled due to the registration type Team. Teams are added during the enrollment process." This is expected in a Team Registration league: teams come from registrations.
- Teams registered but aren't in the tournament division. The offering's Auto Placement was Do not assign or another division. Open the program's 4 Rosters page, click Assign Teams, check the teams, choose the Division and click Assign. You'll see "Team Assignments completed."
Good to know
- You can't change a program's Registration Type after Add Program. To switch types, create a new program.
- Set every team's Pool before you create Pool Play: Pool Play games are between teams in the same pool, and pool standings group teams by Pool.
- To move a registered team to another division later, see How to swap or move teams between divisions in a Team Registration league.
