To stop text messages from an organization, reply STOP to one of its texts. To get them again, opt in again on the organization's website (My Account > My Profile, the text consent box under your cell phone number), because texting UNSTOP or START doesn't turn texts back on.
Applies to: Parents, players and other members who get text messages from an organization (and the admins who help them) · All plans · Legacy and Editor 2.0 websites (the Text Sign Up link works on legacy websites only)
Where: A reply to a text from your organization (to stop); your organization's website > My Account > My Profile > Phone 1 (to restart)
Stop text messages
- Open the latest text from the organization. Its texts start with the organization's name.
- Reply STOP.
What you'll see: "Automated response: This number has been removed from future text messages." The organization's texts to your phone stop from then on.
- Any reply that contains the word "stop" counts, in capital or small letters and anywhere in the message, so "Does practice stop at 7?" turns texts off too.
- STOP turns off one organization's texts. If more than one organization texts you from the same TeamSideline number, STOP turns off the one that texted you most recently. To stop another organization too, wait 10 minutes and reply STOP to a text from that organization.
- A second STOP within 10 minutes is ignored. TeamSideline handles each kind of reply from a phone at most once every 10 minutes.
- STOP doesn't stop emails. To stop an organization's emails, use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of one of its emails.
Get text messages again
Don't reply UNSTOP: it contains the word stop, so it works like STOP. Other replies, such as START, only get an automated reply. Opt in again on the organization's website instead.
- Sign in on the organization's website and go to My Account > My Profile.
- Make sure Phone 1 is your cell phone number and its type is Cell.
- Check the box under Phone 1: "I consent to receive text alerts. This includes event notifications and Marketing and Promotional Messages from (organization). Message Frequency may vary, MSG & Data rates may apply. Text Stop to opt out or HELP for support."
- Click Save.
- TeamSideline texts you "Activation Code: Enter (code) on the (organization) Text Alert Setup page." Within 10 minutes, type the 4-digit code in Activation Code and click Validate. Click Skip only if you don't want texts after all.
What you'll see: "Text Alerts are turned on." An orange Text Enabled icon now shows next to Phone 1, and the organization's next texts come to your phone.
If the organization emails you a Text Sign Up link (legacy websites only), you can use it instead: enter your Mobile Number, check both consent boxes, click Send a code to my phone, and enter the code.
If it doesn't work
- There's no consent box under Phone 1. Phone 1's type must be Cell. If the orange Text Enabled icon shows instead, that phone is already opted in to this organization's texts.
- "Invalid activation code." The code was mistyped. Enter it again exactly as texted.
- "Too many incorrect Activation Codes. Text Alerts were not turned on." or "That Activation Code has expired. Text Alerts were not turned on." Check the box and save again to get a new code, and enter it within 10 minutes.
- "We could not send your activation text. Text Alerts were not turned on." Your profile was saved but the code couldn't be texted. Check the number and try again later.
- The code text never arrives after an earlier STOP. Your mobile carrier may still be blocking texts from that TeamSideline number. Reply START to the last text you got from it (you'll get an automated reply), then check the box and save again.
- You replied HELP. You get "Automated response: Type STOP to opt-out of future text messages." Nothing changes. Any reply that contains "help" gets this answer.
- You replied with a question. Replies aren't passed on. You get "Automated response: Your reply cannot be delivered. Please use the Contact Us page from the organization web site to respond. Text "STOP" to be removed from future text messages." Use the organization's Contact Us page or email instead.
For organization admins
- Admins can't opt a member in or out. Consent has to come from the member, so send them the steps above.
- You aren't told when someone replies STOP. Their phone stops showing (Text Enabled) after their name in your lists on Communications > Send Communication, and it doesn't get your texts.
- If a member says texts stopped without their asking, their reply probably contained the word stop. They opt in again from My Profile.
Good to know
- Opting in is per organization and phone number. Opting in again with one organization doesn't restart another organization's texts.
- There's no setting on the website to turn texts off. Replying STOP is the only way.
- Texts come from a TeamSideline phone number, not from the organization's own phone.
